The Ancient City

The Ancient City describes the society of the cities of Greece and Rome in the earliest stages of their history. It is a description which will be strange to many reader, for it more closely resembles the descriptions of those primitive communities that have become familiar to us from the writings of anthropologists than it does the classic world we know from paintings and literature. The author shows that religion of only dimly understood rites which dominated every aspect of life, every moment of the day, and which was reflected throughout ancient literature.
